Virtual Rhythms

Tapography Competition

CHRP's Virtual Rhythms provides emerging choreographers and videographers an opportunity for exposure to devoted tap fans and leaders from around the globe at the world-renowned Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago as a part of our 20th Anniversary summer festival of tap and percussive arts - RHYTHM WORLD!

There are two categories to choose from:

Choreography

Submit an online video of a soloist, duet, trio, small or large group performing your original choreography for adjudication. Videos should contain complete works and may include past performances or rehearsals. We will screen all videos for appropriateness before entering them in the online contest. We will choose three to 10 finalists to compete, and the public will select the winner through online voting. We will invite the winner to perform live at the Museum of Contemporary Art.

If the winner is unable to perform, the choreography receiving the second largest number of votes will be declared the winner, and so on. The contest winner is responsible for travel and accommodations. CHRP provides only the performance slot.

Videography

Submit an online, original videography/short film of three to seven minutes. We will screen all videos for appropriateness before entering them in the online contest. We will choose three to 10 finalists to compete, and the public will select the winner through online voting. The winner’s video/short film will be screened at the Museum of Contemporary Art.

Prize

CHRP will feature the winning individual, group or video during the Rhythm World faculty performances, alongside the world's greatest tap artists, on August 4, 5 or 7 at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago.

How to Enter

Choose the category you wish to enter; you may submit your video for only one of the two categories. For the Choreography category, provide a video of you or your group dancing to display your abilities and prove that you have the energy and style it takes to perform on the world stage. The video can be filmed anywhere, with any camera. The point is to show off your dancing. For the Videography category, if you've got a great idea for translating tap expressly for video (like Jason Samuels Smith's above), show us. This category is also a good option if you won't be able to attend the Rhythm World festival this summer.

Once you've decided which category to enter, create your video. The video must be three to seven minutes long.

Once you've completed your video, upload it to YouTube. To do this you'll need a YouTube account. They're free and easy to set up. Visit YouTube.com for instructions..

After you’ve uploaded the video, please e-mail a link to the video along with the following information to marc@chicagotap.org. By choosing to participate in the competition, you verify that the work submitted is original.

Information to include in your submission.

  • Your full name or name of group
  • Primary contact e-mail
  • Primary contact phone number
  • Primary contact address
  • Name and role of all group members (including anyone who worked on the video)
  • Ages of all group members
  • The category of your submission
  • Name of dance
  • Name of music (if any)
  • Composer of music (if any)
  • Name of parent/guardian for all members under 18

And that's it. There's no submission fee.

What Happens Next

After we've collected all the submissions, a panel of judges will select the nominees (three to 10 for each category). We'll notify all nominees and confirm their continued interest in participating. We'll post their names and their videos on our web page for the world to see. Then the voting will begin.

Viewers will be able to vote once per day for their favorite videos in each category. The video with the most votes will win. This is an example of what the poll will look like.

After the voting has closed, the winner will be contacted, confirmed and announced. Then it's all up to you to rehearse and prepare for your performance at Rhythm World.
